ATL is experiencing highly volatile wait times that fluctuate dramatically by time of day. This morning (Tue Mar 24) showed the most extreme swings: TSA quoted 3 hours for both PreCheck and general lines at 5:59 AM, with PreCheck lines extending into the baggage claim area (6:41 AM). By mid-morning, conditions reversed sharply—one traveler reported zero wait at the north checkpoint by T gates at 9:45 AM (Tue Mar 24), and by 10 AM lines had "dramatically shortened" after the morning rush cleared.
PreCheck has offered minimal advantage during peak hours. A traveler waited just over 1 hour in PreCheck at 7:49 AM (Tue Mar 24) with ten TSA agents working, while another reported their general-security friend cleared security faster than they did through PreCheck at the same time (7:26 AM). However, earlier data shows more pronounced PreCheck benefits: 2 hours 45 minutes in PreCheck versus unknown general line times on Mon Mar 23 morning. Overnight, lines cleared entirely by 9:30 PM after hitting 4–5 hours earlier in the day (Mon Mar 23).
Arrive 3–4 hours early if traveling during morning peak (5–9 AM). ATL is currently quoting 3-hour waits and has turned off wait-time signs because queues extend beyond tracking capability. If you have flexibility, travel after 10 AM or in evening hours for significantly shorter waits. Note that TSA staffing pressures are visible (Delta personnel assisting in bin areas), but operations are functioning.
